The seven books of the Covington Chronicles show the lives of families in a south Mississippi railroad-and-timber village, along with some surrounding farms. Although it is fun to read the series in order, it isn’t necessary.
What You Need to Know
The readers’ favorite is a young red-haired, spunky girl named Trudy Cameron. When she is ten years old in The Dream Bucket, she freely speaks her mind. While she grows into her late teens, she learns from some brutal lessons that she often needs to keep silent about her activities and thoughts. As Trudy narrates the sequel, she tells in her own words the tragic story of her friend Manuela Blayne, an African-American girl who suffers the consequences of sexual abuse. What Trudy feels, she cannot tell to all her family.
Then in a story about the encounter of her friend Jeremy with the Romani clan living on his family’s property, she is a supporting character, usually silent. In Travelers in Painted Wagons on Cohay Creek, the reader can glimpse at her growth into a young woman.
How the Series Ends
In the seventh book, Letter from Belleau Wood, she tells no one about her hopes and dreams. What she experiences as a beautiful young woman during World War I is her own private story.
